The Roman Empire is split into 2 parts, the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. It was reunited and split again several times over the next century.
The empire was split into two for good. The Western Empire was ruled by Rome, the Eastern Empire was ruled by Constantinople.
Rome was sacked twice: first by the Goths in 410 and then the Vandals in 455. The final blow came in 476, when the last Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus, was forced to abdicate and the Germanic general Odoacer took control of the city.
