Caveats to timeline;
This data is provided to give indicators of comparative recording trends. It should not be used for published data or quoted in official briefings as it is an incomplete dataset.
It is taken from reports from forces submitted a short time after the covered time period and has some omissions because;
1. Some forces have had periods where they have not submitted data due to technical reasons or staff abstractions.
2. Some offences will be reported/recorded retrospectively or detected during investigations and as such would not be captured by the short term data return.
3. The reporting has not been validated to the standards required for published crime data and formal data is obtained from the national crime statistics, published by Home Office each October.
Key for coloured coded events:
Yellow - Political event.
Red - Social event.
Green - COVID related.
Orange - Policy changes related to COVID - England, Scotland and Wales included.
Baby blue - Hate Crime related.
Purple - US related content.
Dark Blue - Brexit related.
Events have been placed into the colour code in the most stringent way possible. It is possible for one event to reach across different groups, but the chosen colour signifies its main content.
Finally, media sources included do not represent a specific political viewpoint or leaning. Rather, have been selected due to their informational and educational value.
