Timeline of the Seven Periods of Jewish History

Jacob's twelve sons became the patriarchs of the twelve tribes of Israel. They then settled in Egypt.

Abraham became the first Patriarch, his son Isaac the second and his son Jacob the third

God created a Covenant with Abraham promising descendants and the Promised Land.

God called Abram to leave Mesopotamia and he became Abraham

The Israelites were put into slavery by the Egyptians

God Sent Moses to free them. Moses protected the Israelites until God sent the Passover, freeing them

Moses then led them through the desert to a mountain where God gave them the Ten Commandments or 'Ten Words'

Moses later died and his successor, Joshua, led them to the Promised Land

God called a young shepherd named David to become King of the Israelites

Saul, the previous King, grew jealous and tried to assassinate him

David fled and gained help from the Philistines and fought Saul's army, and Saul was killed

David then became the King of Israel, and he made Jerusalem the religious capital of his united kingdom

David died and was succeeded by one of his sons, Solomon

Solomon created the temple in Jerusalem to house the Ark of the Covenant and Sacred Vessels

The prophet Jeremiah warned the king and people of Judah to turn back to God

They ignored him and the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon's Temple

They lost the Ark of the Covenant and the people of Judah were exiled

The Israelites exile ended when the Persian King, Cyrus, conquered Babylon

Cyrus decreed that the Jews could go back to Palestine and rebuild their temple in Jerusalem

They also took back the sacred vessels and the Ark of the Covenant

Alexander the Great, a young Greek King, conquered Israel

After Alexander's death, his kingdom was split into two

Israel was left relatively free under Ptolemy's rule, who was one of Alexander's Generals

Antiochus took control and sought to spread the Greek religion through the Jews

An rebellion was formed and Judas Maccabeus formed and alliance with the Romans

War broke out and Antiochus was defeated

The Old Testament was Completed

Pompey the Great, a Roman General, entered Jerusalem

The first of the Herods was made King

Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea

Jesus began to preach to the Public and work miracles

Jesus was put to death by Pontius Pilate and was Crucified

A few days later Jesus rose from the dead and his followers saw him as the son of God and a Human Being

The Jews began to rebel against the Roman Empire for the first time

The Romans destroyed Jerusalem and Solomon's temple

Over 600,000 Jews were killed

The Jews rebelled for a second time

The Jews revolted for the third time and the Romans defeated them

The Romans made it so that the Jews could not go insight of the ruins of Jerusalem. The Jews were then dispersed throughout the world.
