Events
Srebrenica Massacre July 11-16 1995 On July 6th 1995, an operation to take over Srebrenica began. Bosnian Serbs caused terror onto the Bosniaks living there. Under the military Leader Ratko Mladić, 8000 Bosniaks were executed.
Creation of Republika Sprska February 28th 1992. RS is made up of majoritarily Bosniak Serbs.It was autonomous to the People’s Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They want to stay in the Yugoslav federation, which was made up of Serbia and Montenegro at that time. *Red is RS, White is FBiH
Bosnia-Herzegovina declares independance. March 1st 1992 Following the Fall of Yugoslavia, The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) was created. They wish to leave Yugoslavia and become independant.
the Siege of Sarajevo April 2 1992 - February 28th 1996 Serbians from RS attacked cities in the FBiH. They planned to take over the capital in order to start their "ethnic cleansing". Citizens were shot, tortured, executed and starved.
Dayton Agreement signed December 14th 1995 This agreement puts the Bosnian war to an end, thus ending the genocide too.
UN Safe Areas April 16 1993 The united nations declared Sarajevo, Srebrenica, Žepa, Goražde, Tuzla and Bihać as safe areas in Bosnia. Armed military forces were placed in these cities to ensure safety.
Fall of Žepa July 25 1995 Fortunately, no deaths occured during the raid of Žepa. The men were able to flee before RS forces arrived. Unfortunately, women, children and elders were deported to Sarajevo.
Siege of Goražde May 4 1992. RS forces bombed this city which angered the minister of the city who turned against Serbian civilians in Goražde, killing hundreds of women and children, using their bodies as human shields. This was ignored by UN personnels. As UN forces were present, they were able to fight back against the RS, Goražde remained free from the RS military. This massacre resulted in 511 casualties.
Paying for their actions September-October 1995 Bosnian Serb soldiers dug up hidden bodies of Bosniak civilians. With the assistance of United States drones, they were able to find many bodies. Further in the 21st century, the perpetrators continues attempting to identify all the bodies as a way to apologize for their past actions
