Events
1874: Henry Morton Stanly an explorer and journalist arrived and explored todays DR Congo.
Late 15th century: Portuguese sailors arrived in the Kingdom of Kongo. The King traded with the Portuguese and became prosperous. He also raided neighboring districts for slaves that he gave to the Portuguese.
1885: The Belgian colonization of the "Congo Free State" began under the rule of King Leopold ll. He did this using a holding company that was first called "Association Internationale Africaine". He said he want's to end slavery and promote free trade with the colony as well as promote humanitarian policy's.
1879: Stanley was instructed by the King to establish roads and create treaties with tribes. The chives did not know what a treaty is and were given some cloth or trinkets in exchange for there signature. With this they accepted the Belgian flag.
1884: In the Berlin conference or also know as the Congo Conference King Leopold ll was able to seed distrust between the other parties and keep the area of the Congo for himself. Which he now renamed to "Congo Free State".
1890: George Washington Williams, a batiste minister, visited the Congo and was horrified by the atrocities committed under the Kings name.
1908: The Belgian government took over the colonie.
1960: After an uprising of the Congolese people Belgium surrendered and the Congo became independent.

Force Publique: I was first the private army of King Leopold ll and later belonged to the Belgian government. They committed multiple atrocitys under King Leopold ll.
