1830 - Eastern European refugees escaped to Canada
1956 - Canada accepted 37,000 Hungarian refugees
1951 - Assisted Passage Loan Scheme was implemented - provided funding for their passages to Canada
1968 - Canada again accepted American refugees
1970 - Canada accepted non-European refugees (Chilean, Ismaili, Muslim, Iranian and Asian)
1990s - anyone could apply for refugee status at any border, airport or immigration office inside the country
1993 - Canada issued guidelines for female refugees facing gender-related persecution
