1652: Cape Town (now capital of South Africa) is founded by the Dutch.
1799: French soldiers in Egypt uncover the Rosetta Stone, which enabled experts to understand the Ancient Egyptian language for the first time.
1672: The Royal African Company is set up in London to trade goods with Africa and buy African slaves.
1780: Slave trade reaches its peak. Most slave traders are British.
