Herzfeld succeeded by Erich Schmidt who carried out a larger scale excavation.
Schmidt's work ended at Persepolis with the start of World War II.
Sami was succeeded by Ali-Akbar. He believed that Persepolis was part of a much larger settlement on the surrounding plain.
Excavation and restoration of the site was renewed by the Iranian government under the Iranian archaeologists Ali Sami
Government generously gave lots of funding because it was the 2500th anniversary of the Iranian monarchy.
Institute of Achaemenid Research at Persepolis was established.
