In 1534 Jacques Cartier was sent by King Francis (the first) of France for gold and other riches, spices, and a passage to Asia. Cartier left on April 20, 1534, with two ships and 61 men.
Jacques Cartier was born on December 31, 1491, in Saint-Malo , Brittany, France.
Cartier arrived in Canada on May 10, 1534. He discovered Prince Edward Island around that time, while exploring the west coast of Newfoundland.
On his second voyage Cartier explored the St. Lawrence River and set up a base in Quebec.
Cartier continued to explor the St. Lawrence River to Montreal.
On his third voyage Cartier tried to make a permanet settlement for France, along the St. Lawrence River nere Quebec.
Jacques Cartier died in Saint-Malo in 1557.
