The book anthem was written by Ayn Rand in Russia.

During the time Ayn Rand wrote this book, the Great Purge of Stalinist Russia was going on. The Great Purge Of Stalinist Russia was when a the leader of Communist Russia, Joseph Stalin, was paranoid of opposition. It was this paranoia that led to the Great Purge where millions of people were executed or sent to labor camps in Siberia.

During the Great Purge of Stalinist Russia, people were forced to admit their guilt or they would suffer very badly. Most people who pleded guilty were executed or they would be sent to labor camps were harsh conditions would lower their chance of suvival.

Between 1936-1938, 36% of the communist party was purged, and his power was becoming absolute.

Stalin basiclly killed anyone who was potential threat to his leadership. This probably made Ayn Rand write the Anthem because during the Great Purge everyone was the same, and so were the people in the Anthem or were forced to be.
