Death penalty was used in all 13 US colonies at outbreak of American Revolution for many crimes including theft/stealing.
Death penalty was no longer used as a punishment for stealing, and was only used for murder and treason.
Penalties for theft currently include community service, prison/jail time, fines, and probation.
