Beginning of the Industrial Revolution. A period of numerous inventions & a rapidly changing society.
Prior to the Industrial Revolution, England was predominantly farming & ruralised.
Major developments and inventions in manufcaturing, agriculture & travel spread through North America, Europe, & finally Europe by the 1750's.
Steam-powered ships & railways meant progress went faster.
Jobs once done by hand were now taken over by a machine. Factories were built, and there was an increasing need of coal to power the machines.
There was also an increasing need for transport, so canals were built, while railways and roads were improved.
The effect on society was life-changing. People moved from rural areas to urban areas at a rapid rate and with little money, which left a lot of people in left in slums and appalling living conditions.
