1843 american republican party formed in new york. many members of this party along with nativists from the know-nothing party proposed a 25 year wait for citizenship.
1882 - Immigration Act fifty cent tax on new immigrants and convicts banned from entering the nation. - chinese exclusion act prevents skilled and unskilled chinese laborers from becoming citizens for ten ears. fueled by anti-chinese sentiment and high rates of unemployment
1892 chinese exclusion act strengthened. chinese laborors must carry a resident permit at all times or else risk deportation. waiting time for citizenship increases to 20 years. ellis island opens.
National Origins Act (1924) national immigration cap reduced to 165,000 people, and nationality caps are reduced to 2%. these caps did not apply to the western hemisphere.

Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 consolidates all immigration legislature and eliminates race as a factor of exclusion. quota system remains in place but still excludes people from the western hemisphere. immigration of any country is capped at ⅙ of 1% of the population based on the 1920 census.
The Immigration Act of 1965 gets rid of nationality quotas. limits immigration from the eastern hemisphere to 170000 (20000 per country), and western hemisphere immigration to 120000 (no country limit). additionally, there is a preference system for family members.
Simpson-Mazzoli Act (1986) grants amnesty to over 3 million illegal immigrants. step back for nativists.
2002 homeland security created. dream act proposed and failed.
2010 dream act passed.
2017 white house restricts immigration from muslim countries.
2018 trump wants to reduce the amount of immigrants to zero. he also proposes the creation of a border wall.
