In about 1495 Leonardo da Vinci sketched the first plans for a humanoid robot.
In 1739 Jacques de Vaucanson made a famous mechanical duck that could crane its neck, flap its wings, swallow food, and even poop.

Henry Ford installed the world's first moving conveyor belt assembly line in his car factory. The robot assembled things much faster than before.
The first true robot toy was produced in Japan. It was called the "Lilliput". It was a wind-up toy that walked. It was made from tinplate and stood just 15cm tall.
George Devol and Joe Engleberger designed the first programmable robot arm. This later became the first industrial robot, completing dangerous and repetitive tasks on an assembly line at General Motors (1962).
The Soviet Union launched ‘Sputnik’, the first artificial orbiting satellite. This marked the beginning of the space race.
The first computer to be mass produced is the IBM 360.
Honda starts a new project to create a walking humanoid robot.

Isaac Asimov created Three Laws of Robotics: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Karel Capek coined the term "robot".

Sony released the first version of AIBO, a robotic dog that can learn things. It can also entertain and communicate with owner. (We have more advanced versions now.)

Researchers at Cornell University built the first self-replicating robot, that links itself together with magnets.
