Maria Mitchell was born into a Quaker family in Nantucket Massachusetts.
Following in her fathers footsteps, when she was just a teenager, Mitchell opened her own school.
Mitchell was elected into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Mitchell was admitted to the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences.
In 1865, Maria Mitchell began working at Vassar College as the first professor of Astronomy as well as head Director of the college Observatory.
Discovery of "Miss Mitchell'c Comet"
In 1894 she was elected to the Women’s Hall of Fame for her many great contributions to science.
When she died in 1889, an Observatory, a Liberty Ship in WWII, and a Lunar Crater were all named in her honor
