1852 Elisha Otis developed a safety mechanism to prevent elevator car from falling. He showed how it worked at the New York invention exposition.
May 10, 1876 the United States celebrated its 100th anniversary. The centennial exhibition was held in Philadelphia.
1880 The light bulb was invented. It Took Thomas Edison 2 years to add a street lighting system.
1870 Rockefeller founded standard oil. Kerosene cost 30 cents a gallon.
May 1, 1886 Thousands of workers mounted a demonstration for 8 hour work days. Dozens of people were killed during the riots and strikes.
1871 Fire devastates Chicago. This fire is known as the great fire of Chicago.
1888 Richmond, Virginia, introduced street cars powered by overhead electrical cables. They were invented by Frank Julian Sprague.
1858 Rowland H. Macy opened what he called a department store. It became the largest single store in America.
1884 LaMarcus Thompson opened the worlds first roller coaster. It was the first ride to open at Coney Island.
1883 "Buffalo Bill" created Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. It started from a fourth of July party he had.
1864 Sand Creek Massacre. Plains Indians fought to repel the whites from moving south.
1889 Federal gov opens the Oklahoma territory. thousands gathered on the border to enter and claim there land.
1890 Sitting bull dies. He was the first leader of all seven Lakota Sioux bands.
1876 Sioux defeat U.S. troops in the battle of the little big horn. Custer and all of his men died.
1869 transcontinental railroad connects from east to west. The last spike was gold plated.
1877 First farmers alliance is established. It was an organized agrarian ecosystem movement.
1882 Congress passes the Chinese exclusion act. The first significant law restricting immigration into the United States.
1883 Civil Service Act is established. It established a merit system for government jobs.
1888 Booker T. Washington opens Tuskegee Institute. A university in Alabama.
1896 Plessy V. Ferguson case happened. The supreme court ruled separate but equal facilities legal.
