o 1859 Jefferson Territory established
o 1863- telegraph established linking Denver to the East
o 1929- The Great Depression- October 23, 1929, the New York stock market crashed. This caused factories to close and the slackening demand for food crushed many farmers. Hispanics were the hardest hit due to all of the temporary, migrant, and irrigation jobs drying up.
o 1692- Diego de Vargas Zapata leads Spanish troops in and puts an end to the Pueblo revolt.
o 1792 French frontiersman Pierre Vial arrives in Saint Louis from Santa Fe, blazing the Cimarron Trail branch of the Santa Fe Trail
o 1803- James Monroe and Robert Livingston sign the Louisiana Purchase. This doubles the size of the United States and paves the way for westward expansion or “Manifest Destiny
o 1806- Zebulon Pike attempts to climb Pikes Peak; explores the Arkansas river valley and is arrested by Spanish Cavalrymen in the Rocky Mountains
o 1833- the first U.S. establishment in Colorado- Bent’s Fort
o 1848- the rest of the land of the future Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah is transferred to the United States when Mexico signs the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to end the Mexican-American War
o 1861- the Colorado Territory is established
o 1862- Homestead act passed
o 1876- Colorado attains statehood, July 1st- the Colorado State Constitution is approved by voters
o 1919- the first radio transmitter and broadcasting facility set up in Colorado Springs
o 1920- flights started connecting large cities for airmail service
o 1921- the Panic- a short but deep economic U.S. Depression impacting especially farmers and irrigators
