1642 - Jeanne Mance established the Montreal Hotel Dieu
1639 - St. Augustinian Sisters came to Canada and established the Hotel Dieu
1700-1900s - The Grey Nuns were established in Canada
1874 - Dr. Theophilus Mack established the first hospital training school in Canada that wasn't religious based
Late 19th Century - push for hospital trained nurses, number of nurses exploded, Nightingale style of nursing made its way to Canada
Mid 19th Century - middle and upper class start using hospitals, asepsis and anesthesia
Early 19th Century - wealthy individuals established hospitals to help the sick and poor
Beginning of 20th Century - most nurses worked in private duty
Early 20th Century - governments role in health of population increased
1930s - decrease in private duty nurses
1970s - boom in hospital construction, increased use of medical supplies and technology
First half of 20th Century - nursing gained status as one of the few respectable professions for women

2001 - 94% of Canadian nurses were female
1940 - CNA created an official policy of non-discrimination
1910-1920s - most provinces brought in registration processes
1939 - CNA recommended provinces and territories to create practical nursing programs to help address shortage of nurses post WW2
1854 - Florence Nightingale led a group of nurses to Crimean War
1920-1940s - hospitals created their own Schools of Nursing
2000 - CNA recommends all provinces and territories make entry for practice a nursing baccalaureate degree by this year
2004 - CNA and CASN jointly agree to the standard of baccalaureate entry requirements
Mid 20th Century - starting to see problems with hospital-based schools of nursing
1960-1970s - shift of nursing education into the community, not hospitals
1950s - biggest increase in university nursing schools, but shift was not made until the 1960s
1919 - UBC baccalaureate degree program established
1920 - McGill baccalaureate degree program established
1938 - first French baccalaureate degree program established
1908 - CNA founded
