1872 begins oceanography with The Challenger Expedition. What is oceanography? Oceanography is when scientists measure sea depth, study the composition of the sea floor, and collect a lot of oceanic data.
In 1925 the German Meteor Expedition looked over the South Atlantic floor with sonar equipment and discovers the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.
The first deep ocean dive took place between 1932 and 1934. The dives uncovered cold-body radiated creature and provide sediment samples.
In1943 France, the first diving equipment is invented, it included a redesigned car regulator that provided air to divers.
In 1955 a survey ship detected linear magnetic strip on the ocean floor. The magnetic strips lead to the formulation of the theory of plate tectonics.
In 1962 France built the first underwater habitat that scientist studied for days doing experiments.
In 1977 a submersible, Alvin, hydrothermal vents and deep sea ecosystems that ahve worms and giant clams living without the suns energy.
In 1984 a observation was made in the Pacific Ocean that helps scientist predict El Nino and start to understand the connection between weather and oceanic events.
In 1995 the mapping of the entire sea florr takes place.
In 2002 data from the seafloor shows a new wave associated with earthquakes.
In 2006 the internet provides scientists all over the world access to live data collected from ocean floor laboratories.
