August 1961- The Berlin Wall is erected
May 1971- Erich Honecker becomes general secretary
7th October 1989- Gorbachev warns Honecker that life 'punishes those who delay'
9th October 1989- Honecker's orders for the police to soot demonstators are not obeyed
