Nya lives in southern Sudan and travels everyday to get water.
As Nya travels she gets a thorn in her foot and uses another thorn to remove it.
Salva is a boy of the Dinka tribe, that lives in Sudan and goes to school. One day he hears gunshots at his school
Nya travels to the pond again. She see's other women and girls also collecting water.
Nya returns home and has a meal. Her mother tells her to take her younger sister Akeer. They set out for the pond once again. Nya's family moved to a lake three days away. They were only there for 5 months because of the fight with the rival tribe Dinka. Nya's family had been coming to this lake for generations. She liked it at the lake because She did not have to make two long trips everyday. Nya's father and brother went off to hunt. This was always a risk because of the rival tribe Dinka.
Salva ran away from his school and kept going for hours
Salva meets an old lady who lets him live in her barn and feeds him.
Salva joins a group of people from his same tribe heading away from the war to Ethiopia
Salva makes a friend in his new tribe named Marial, they were stung by many bees trying to get honey from a hive to eat
Salva finds his uncle
Nya's sister is sick. There is a clinic with medicine three days away.
Marial went missing in the middle of the night and they think he was taken by a lion
Salva and his tribe have to cross the Nile River in small boats they made.
After Salva and his tribe cross the Nile, they must go through the most difficult part of their journey: the Akobo Desert
A group of rebels ambushes Salva's tribe in the middle of the desert and kill Salva's uncle
Salva's tribe finally arrive at the refugee camp in Ethiopia
The doctor gave her medicine and she was almost her old self. The doctor said to boil the water that they drink. This would be hard since they collect it in such tiny amounts.
Two men visit the village. They are talking about the water problem.
The men finished there meeting. They say that there will be water behind Nya's house.
A tall drill was brought to the village from the two men.
Salva thinks he found his mother at the camp, but it turns out it is someone else
Salva was 17 now, he had been in the camp for 6 years. Ethiopia's government is collapsing so evryone has to leave the camp
After the men left Nya started clearing a path between two trees in her backyard where the men said water will come.
The men brought more men to work on the water problem. Nya thinks the boss is being harsh on the men working.
After three days of drilling water shot up out of the ground, but it was filled with mud.
The men said that the water was from the pond and clear water was farther down.
Other men began to clear the area they were building something.
They are building a school. Nya was thrilled to learn how to read and write.
A public pump opened and there was a tribe wide celebration. They were naming the school after a school in America. It turns out Salva was one of the men that brought the water. Nya and Salva met.
Soldiers ran everyone out of the refugee camp. Salva along with 1500 other boys made it out alive, but 1000 died from drowning, crocodiles, or being shot
Salva, along with the group of 1500 other boys finally make it to a new refugee camp in Kenya. Salva had become the leader of the group
Salva had to take 3 planes to get to New York. It was winter in America so Salva had to wear many different layers of clothes because he had never experienced winter before. Finally, Salva met his new family: his father Chris, his mother Louise, and his 4 siblings.
Salva had been living in New York for a few months now, and he has noticed many differences to Sudan. One day Salva receives an email from his cousin working in Zimbabwe about his father having stomach surgery. Salva is ecstatic after hearing they have found his father. He must fly back to Sudan immediately
Finally, after many emails and conversations and planning, Salva had made it to Sudan to he his father. It turns out his whole family was ok except 2 of his brothers who had died in the war. Salva could only stay for a few days before he had to leave because of all the war going on. Salva promised that he would come back to the village as soon as it was safe.
Slowly but surely, Salva stared making plans and collecting money for his trip to Sudan. Through his journey, Salva would always remember his uncle's words, "A step at a time. One problem at a time-just figure out this one problem."
