Unification of Germany
Germany is a nation for the first time after nationalistic war against France. The ceremony took place at Versailles, not Berlin which is a symbol of its military power and conquest. This foreshadows the next half century as Germany continued to rise in power, creating tension with the other European states.
Triple Alliance
It was a secret agreement between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. This started to setup a rivalry between alliance systems creating conflict and competition leading to war.
Germany pursues 'weltpolitik'
An Imperialist foreign policy adopted by the German Kaiser Wilhelm II to gain colonial possessions to compete with the rest of Europe. This stirred up jealousy in the Pan-German League of other colonies.
Franco-Russian Alliance
The two came together despite lack of common interests with a secret treaty. France needed support against the Germans and Russia likewise with Austria-Hungary.
German Naval Laws
Five separate laws were passed to commit to building a navy to compete with the United Kingdom. This soon started to worry Britain as it threatened their naval supremacy which had protected them. They began to shift policies and thus began the Anglo-German naval arms race.
Anglo-Japanese Alliance
It bound Britain and Japan to help protect Chinese and Korean interests. This helped to fight against the Russian expansion and later helped the Japanese defeat Russia.

A military conflict in which Japan forced Russia to abandon their expansion. Japan is the first Asian power to defeat a European power. The defeat fueled the rivalry, which would continue to build tension in the upcoming years.
First Morroccan War
An international crisis concerning its status due to France wanting control of Morocco. Germany did not want France to gain power, and the Kaiser declares its support for the Moroccan Sultan. This made Germany’s relation with France and the United Kingdom very strained. It did improve the Anglo-French Entente.
British Dreadnought launched
A battleship revolutionized naval power, sparking a navals arms race (especially with the Germans).
Triple Entente
An alliance between the UK, France, and Russia. The tension helped with creating the alliance systems for the war.
Bosnian Crisis
International tension from Austria-Hungary annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Balkan Provinces). These were still possessed by the Ottoman Empire, who had given Austria- Hungary temporary power.

French troops were deployed in Morocco which brought Germany’s wrath and another crisis
First Balkan War
A war between the Balkan League and the Ottoman Empire. Thus slowly bringing the Ottoman Empire to its demise.
German War Council
An informal conference of military leaders discussing Europe, strategies, ect. Tensions were high in Europe with the arms race, expansion, and alliances.
