Events
1798 - Explorer George Bass visits Western Port and the island region, marking European exploration and the beginning of colonial interest.
1870 - The Isle of Wight Hotel opens in Cowes and tourism begins to build, marking some early tourism infrastructure, accommodation.
1878 - Regular ferry service begins from Hastings to San Remo/Cowes region, which improves access, allowing more visitors.
1920 - The “guest-house era” peaks and guided tours start for the penguin arrival at Summerland Beach. Tourism becomes more organised & nature-based.
1928 - Motor vehicle racing begins on the island, including early version of the Australian Grand Prix. This added another tourism/infrastructure feature (motorsport).
1933 - First car Ferry to Phillip Island, this imporved access to the Island
1940 - First bridge connecting Phillip Island to the Mainland (San Remo)
1969 - More modern bridges replace older ones, this allows for better access to Phillip Island
1992 - Koala Conservation Reserve opens on the island, which shows the devolpment of wildlife and ecotourism.
1996 - Phillip Island Nature Parks open which shows the growth and consolidation of tourism/conservation infrastructure and management.
2019 - A new visitor centre for the penguin parade is established which shows the modern infrastructure upgrades to support visitor volumes and experience.
