Dominated by the papacy and, in turn, enhanced the papacy's power; took steps to address some of the issues that had sparked the Reformation, such as placing limits on simony (the selling of church offices) and mandating that a seminary for the education of the clergy should be established in every diocese; refused to concede any point of theology to the Protestants; emphatically endorsed their traditional teachings on the sacraments, the role of priests, the belief that salvation comes from faith as well as works, and that the source for this faith was both the Bible and the traditions of the Church

One of the major movements of the Counter-Reformation (which was a reaction of the Catholic Church to fight against the growth of the Protestant Church); reaffirmed the teachings of the Catholic Church, clarified doctrine, and decried the heresy of Martin Luther; debated transubstantiation ( Catholics believed that the Eucharist transformed in the body and blood of Christ and Protestants believed that it was a transformation of spirit; just angered/inspired the Protestants more; key concept: religious pluralism challenged the concept of a unified Europe
