Effect (International): Slow shift from Taisho Democracy to Showa Fascism and pursuit of more aggressive foreign policy; Shōwa fascists aided by the financial interests of the zaibatsu. The Japanese military were successfully defied the government by refusing to enforce discipline on the Kwantung Army.
Cause (Domestic): Effects of Great Depression sparked in 1929 hit Japan from the Hawley-Smoot Tariff.
Effect (Domestic): Damaged faith in the international economic system and raised doubts in Japan over the trustworthiness of the USA as a trading partner; Japanese products hit particularly hard by Hawley-Smoot Tariff, military gained more power over foreign policy and decided to push country in an expansionist direction.
