Formal Period of Reconstruction (1 avr. 1865 – 1 janv. 1877)
Description:
Although Maryland was a border state and therefore did not undergo Federally sanctioned reconstruction like Confederate States did, the end of reconstruction still had a political and social impact on the state. When the era of reconstruction ended in 1877, it marked the beginning of the Jim Crow period. Racially discriminatory legislation had already been prevalent at the state and local levels in Maryland, but the participation of the recently unoccupied South only served to reinforce these ideas.
