Description:
Before Haiti called for its independence, France, in the 1790’s, wanted to help abolish slavery in the West Indies but did not choose to help enslaved Haitians. Haitian slaves were inspired by he talk of liberty and equality so they rushed to revolt in 1791. The leader of these rebellious slaves was Toussaint L’Ouverture who was a self-educated slave. Toussaint’s army fought in many battles against the armies of Britain, France, and Spain. It resulted with the mot lives taken from any revolution in history. By 1798, the rebels finally freed enslaved Haitians and controlled most of the island, even though it was still a French colony. In 1802, Napoleon sent an army to reconquer Haiti but ended up agreeing to a truce in April 1802.
