Wrecked Health (1 janv. 1910 – 1 janv. 1950)

Description:

Since his early days, George Orwell has been living with certain conditions that have affected him in one form or another. At the age of ten, he already had significant issues with cough that was becoming more and more prominent as he grew older.
However, this was not the most threatening condition he had to deal with. He has been repeatedly tested positive for tuberculosis - which was, in his times, treated by fresh air and healthier diet (since there was no cure yet).
On of the most severe cases of Orwell's tuberculosis was when he and his friends were nearly drowned in the "bloody cold" waters when their boat got tangled up in the infamous Corryvreckan whirpool.
Due to the cold water, Orwell fell seriously ill and spent many months fighitng his wrecked health. Nevertheless he did not give up and continued his work on "The Last Man of Europe" thath later became the 1984.
commenting on the illness that has struck him after the boat accident "like a fool I decided not to go to a doctor - I wanted to get on with the book I was writing." Orwell was diagnosed with tuberculosis and consequently treated with a "new and revolutionary" drug Streptomycin. At the end of the treatment, George Orwell receives a letter from his publisher saying that "It really is rather important... from the point of view of your literary career to get it [the new novel] by the end of the year and indeed earlier if possible.". This forced George Orwell to complete 1984 as quickly as he could. In November 30th 1948 the novel was finished. Although George Orwell has been spending most of his time in a hospital, at that time. On January 21st, 1950 he suffer a massive haemorrhage and died alone.
