Vivaldi brothers (1291) The Vivaldi brothers departed from Genoa with two ships, and planned to sail around Africa and reach India. They did not succeed however but this legitimized the idea of sailing and voyaging to gather more resources.
Prince Henry of Portugal (1415) Prince Henry of Portugal conquered the Moroccan port of Ceuta. After this he sponsored (paid for) a series of voyages to sail around the west African Coast. His goal was to set up trading posts to make it easier to trade with Indians.
Christopher Columbus (1492) Christopher Columbus sailed his three ships west in order to sail around the whole world and reach India. He did not account for America being in the middle.
Ferdinand Magellan (1519) Ferdinand Magellan left Spain in September of 1519 to sail to the spice islands. The trip lasted almost 4 months and the crewmen had almost no food remaining. They would eat rats and leather to survive. Magellan never made it to the spice islands as he died in the Philippines. His crew however did make it to the spice islands and they were the first crew to circumnavigate the world.
Vasco Da Gama (1497) Vasco Da Gama led a small fleet in search of India. He planned to sail around Africa and through the indian Ocean. De Gama brought with him gold, pearls, wool textiles, bronzeware, and iron tools to trade for spices and pepper. A big goal for voyaging was spices and spreading Christianity. He reached India on May 20th 1497
The Smallpox epidemic (1519) Beginning in 1519 an epidemic of smallpox which was imported from other continents was ravaging the Aztec empire. Due to these diseases Mexico had declined in almost 90 percent of their population. The smallpox even travelled throughout North and South America.
Population Increases (1800) Due to the massive increases in the global exchange of food and crops there was an increase in nutrition. This led to the global population increasing dramatically. In the 1500s the population was around 425 Million, and by the 1800s, the population had increased to 900 Million.

Captain James Cook (1728 - 1779) Captain James Cook led three expeditions to the Pacific. Cook charted eastern Australia and New Zealand, as well as Caledonia, Vanuatu, and Hawaii to the European maps of the Pacfic. Because of Cook’s voyages he was able to help the Europenas Geographer’s understanding of the world.
Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (1565 - 1575) Miguel Lopez de Legazpi organized an intrusion in the Philippines. Because the Philippines had no central government, there was no organized resistance. By 1575, the spanish forces controlled the coastal regions of the central and northern islands.
The Seven Years’ War (1756 - 1763) The Seven Years’ War was a global conflict that took place in different places, Europe, India, the Caribbean, and North America. The war laid the foundations for the British Imperial rule for the next 150 years.
