1 sept. 1519 - Ferdinand Magellan (1519) Ferdinand Magellan left Spain in September of 1519 to sail to the spice islands. The trip lasted almost 4 months and the crewmen had almost no food remaining. They would eat rats and leather to survive. Magellan never made it to the spice islands as he died in the Philippines. His crew however did make it to the spice islands and they were the first crew to circumnavigate the world.
