14 sept. 1914 - First Battle of the Marne

Description:

The First Battle of the Marne was one of the earliest fights that shaped World War One. With the Germans on the heels of the French and nearing Paris the French could not afford another loss. This battle saw one of the first uses of trench warfare in Europe. The Germans were so close to Paris, but with all the Allies forces banding together at the Marne they were able to push the Germans back to a 100 kilometer retreat. The main reason for this was thanks to the British army finding a 30 kilometer split separating the two German armies, causing a major retreat, in fear of encirclement. After the Germans retreated they dug trenches around the Aisne River, which would eventually become the western front.
