3 sept. 1943 - The Invasion of Italy
Description:
09/03/1943-09/16/1943
The Invasion of Italy was the Allied amphibious landing on mainland Italy. The new Italian government had surrendered on Sept. 3, 1943, but the Germans seized control, ending in the Allied Forces fighting German troops as they advanced up the peninsula. Canadian troops had an important role in this, as they had helped British troops lead the way across the strait of Messina and to the bottom of Italy. This was significant to the war as it meant that the Allied Forces now gained control of Italy and were closer to Germany, and were able to begin the bombing without having to refuel.
