In 1857, James Alden, commanding officer of the Coast Survey Steamer Active, discovered the first known sea canyon, stretching 95 miles into the pacific ocean. The depth of the canyon is 11,800 feet. The canyon is now known as Monterey Canyon, located off the coast of California.
This event was significant because it was the discovery of the first ever deep sea canyon. The canyon offered scientific discovery.
