22 sept. 1993 - Healthcare Reform Introduced

Description:

Healthcare was an issue for Clinton because the cost of caring for the sick and injured was “going to bankrupt the country.” In 1993, nearly 14% of the gross domestic product was being spent on doctors, nurses, hospitals, medicines, and high-tech equipment. That was $2.7 billion a day. In that same year, 39 million people had no health insurance. Most were either too rich to qualify for Medicaid or too poor to be able to afford private health coverage. 10 million of those were children who would be at risk for developing chronic illnesses if they did not receive regular checkups early on. Clinton decided to overhaul the healthcare system and established a 500-member task force with his wife Hillary in charge. Their goal was to reduce the cost of healthcare and provide universal coverage or health insurance for all. The Health Security Act was introduced in November 1993, but there was a great deal of controversy and opposition. By the summer of 1994, the bill lost bi-partisan consensus support and in September, it was declared dead because no one could agree on a compromise.
