Became Outremer's standing army fighting the infidel. Attracted donations of money and land in Outremer and Europe, and were well trusted.
Trust encouraged pilgrims to travel.
Became bankers, deposit money in the west and withdraw in the east.
Henry II donated large sums of money in penance for his role in the murder of Thomas Beckett. Privded horses and armour. Stimulated the economy of the East.
