5 janv. 1713 - The Treaty of Utrecht aka Treaty of Peace and Friendship

Description:

In 1700, the King of Spain died without an heir. France took this opportunity to try and seize Spain and its territories. This started the War of Spanish Succession in Europe. Britain and other European countries fought against France. (All of the war happened in Europe) Peace talks followed and let to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. France was forced to give up a lot of its territories in "Canada". The French had to hand over Acadia (includes parts of present day Nova Scotia and PEI. This led to English settlement here. The British did not consult the First Nations about the land claims or the terms of the treaty. The British wanted the First Nations land and were either chased away or killed by British settlers. Some Abenaki (First Nations part of the Wabanaki Confederacy) relocated to New France and joined forces with the French and First Nations. The Mi'kmaq and Maliseet stayed and fought.
