19 oct. 1812 - Napolean Retreats from Russia Nationalism Impact: 0

Description:

During this time Napoleon Bonaparte was a very prominent military and political figure desiring to create a French-governed Europe. Napoleon had conquered all of Europe except for the United Kingdom and Spain. After winning the war against Russia (1801), Napolean had made the Russian Tsar Alexander his ally. After the execution of the Duke of Enghein, Tsar Alexander began to hate Napoleon and began to cooperate with the United Kingdom. Napoleon decided to wage war against Russia in order to get them back as a French ally. In June 1812, the French invaded Russia on Napoleons orders, making their way to Moscow yet suffering large losses caused by lack of food, disease exhaustion and battles. Napoleon eventually conquered Moscow, yet the deserted city was set on fire by the Russians themselves. After staying to long in the burned city, Napoleon decided to head back to France suffering large losses caused by battles and harsh weather. Napoleons army of more than 500,000 was defeated, signalling a turning point in the Napoleonic era and European affairs.
This event affected the French Nationalism very negatively as it shattered their pride and they lost many resources, men and power. The French Nationalism changed as the country of France had lost a very critical battle in their expansion for domination and power of Europe.
