Summary: Because of the Union naval blockade of Southern ports, Confederate cotton had to be shipped across the Mississippi River, through Louisiana and Texas and out of Mexico to sell to European markets
Outcome: Union victory, casualties 19,233 total (10,142 Union; 9,091 CSA)
Significance: Split the Confederacy in half and cut off cotton sales to foreign markets, Britain decided not to support the South
