8 janv. 1830 - Indian Removal Act

Description:

The Indian Removal Act, passed by president Andrew Jackson, allowed the president to negotiate removal treaties with the Indian tribes that were living to the east of the Mississippi. Indians would be forced off their lands for the promise of lands in the West. However, tribes such as the Seminoles and Creeks refused to emigrate, leading to conflict with the government. The act caused inhumane treatment of many tribes, especially the Cherokee, who were forced off their land at bayonet-point, with over 4,000 of their tribe dying during the march, called the Trail of Tears.
