28 juin 1914 - Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Description:

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On this day him and his wife, Sophie, were touring Sarajevo, Bosnia in an open car with little security. Nedjelko Cabrinovic, a Serbian nationalist then threw a bomb at them but it rolled off the back of the car and injured an officer and bystanders. When they were on their way to visit the injured officer they took a wrong turn where Gavrilo Princip happened to be. Gavrilo then shot Franz Ferdinand and his wife. He then turned the gun on himself but a bystander threw himself on him to prevent the shot. This event was one of the main causes of World War 1.
