One of the main events that sparked the war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was from Austria-Hungary. Germany secretly agreed to give their support to Austria-Hungary. It was on July 28th that Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia who was joined by Great Britain, Russia, Belgium and France. During the war the Central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire and the Allied Powers were Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States. Russia ended up leaving the war in 1917 because of the Russian Revolution. On April 6th 1917 the United States joined the war on the side of the allies. One of the main reasons they joined was because of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany.
