The Indian removal Act was signed on May 28, 1830 by President Andrew Jackson. This Act gave President Andrew Jackson the power to grant unsettled land west of the Mississippi to the Native American tribes in exchange for their lands inside state borders. The Act was intended to utilize peaceful negotiations between the U.S. government and the various tribes in order to relocate the tribes from their homelands to a designated Indian Territory. This relocation of Native American Lands resulted in significant conflict between the tribes and the U.S. government. While some of the tribes were peacefully relocated, many were not. Five Southeast tribes in particular resisted the Act and refused to negotiate with the government. These tribes, the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole, were ultimately forced by the U.S. Military to relocate.
