Description:
The battle of Ap Bac had 2500 ARVN unit against 250 Viet Cong. ARVN commanders first refused to fight, and once they did engage they refused to accept the help from the American advisors. In all, there were only 12 VC that went KIA or MIA from this engagement, with 165 ARVN going KIA, 3 U.S. advisors and 5 helicopters being shot down.
This event affected the war because it showed the U.S. exactly how incompetent the ARVN and south Vietnamese government was. They realised that they would need to mainly fight the war on their own. This was also the last straw for the U.S. government to accept Ngo Dinh Diem, so they staged his assassination.
