doctor dies and ownership goes to wife
Scott tries to purchase freedom but is denied so he sues for freedom for him and wife and daughter born in Wisconsin
supreme court ruling:
1) Black Americans are not citizens
2) Missouri Compromise is unconstitutional
3) Dred Scott was not free
* showed that no state was truly slave free
