The Choson dynasty was no longer a tributary state of the Qing dynasty, was open to Japanese. It was Japan's first acquisition of a colony (Taiwan) - birth of the overseas Japanese empire. Taiwan had sugar. Qing dynasty had to pay indemnity for losing the war (escaleted the Qing dynasty decline)
