Description:

France sold the United States the entire Louisiana Territory for $15 million
One of the best land bargains in history: 828,000 square miles for approximately 3¢ an acre
Jefferson: as president didn’t know if this purchase was constitutional:
Because he was a strict constitutionalist and it wasn’t directly stated in the constitution that the president can make real estate deals
But he did it anyways because it was such a good deal
Short term impact:
Removed the last major european power from North America
More american westward expansion and exploration
People became more afraid of secession and “foreign intrigue”
Long term impact:
America got the west ½ of the “richest river valley in the world”
Furthered the foundations for america to become a major global power
Inserted acquired foreign territories into the United States as equals
Expanded the wealth of the United States and the power of the central government
