Auschwitz, located in Poland, was one of the many concentration camps during World War II run by Hitler and his Nazi Party. Auschwitz was 6,720 acres. It was larger than 5,000 football fields and half the size of Manhattan. Hitler and his army wiped 6 million Jewish people off of the face of this earth. Hitler's main priority was to exterminate the entire Jewish race. At the beginning of this time period of the death camps, prisoners were either executed on the spot, starved to death, or worked to death. The was of killing eventually grew to gas chambers. The prisoners were told they were going to take a shower as they were marched to their death. The gas chambers killed a prisoner in 15 minutes, suffocating them and drowning them from the inside out. The start of the mass murder of Jewish people at Auschwitz was very significant event in World War II because of the impact it had and still has on the world. Many family members were lost at Auschwitz. Auschwitz was the largest of the death camps and grew into the unimaginable and brutal Holocaust killing over 6 million people.
