Two Storage Mechanisms in Free Recall
Description:
Describes how the position of information in a list, or order may determine how well its recalled.
• Word list – participants asked to learn and remember words
o Primacy effect – Participants remembered words at the beginning of the list better
Held in the working memory better
More likely to be rehearsed -> transferred to long term memory
Attention better at this part of the list than the middle
o Recency effect – participants remembered words at the end of the list better
Had not disappeared from working memory at the time of testing
Were forgotten if there was a delay between memorisation and testing
o Shows that WM and LTM work via different mechanisms
