During the 1600s the Dutch excelled in art, and had many of the best artist in Europe. Wealthy merchants sponsored many artists during the time. Rembrandt van Rijn is known as the greatest Dutch artist of the period. He painted painted regular and group portraits of wealthy middle-class merchants. He used strong contrast of light and shadow in his work. Jan Vermeer used indoor settings in her paintings. Indoor settings were popular among many artists at the time. Artwork with domestic settings were also popular during this period.
