Description:
-The gold rush began whenever gold was found at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. This news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people (from all over) to California.
-An important person involved was James W. Marshall.
-Slavery both during and after the gold rush was dividing Congress. Hinton Helper, a racist abolitionist, helped with this issue. Mr. Helper, supposed helper of getting Mr. Lincoln the presidency, played a major role. He helped Lincoln win over the state of California, and he also wrote books. Mr. Helper's work proved a malignantly divisive one, pushing the conflicts that led the nation to the Civil War.
